Our Class Options

Our weekend Childbirth Education Class has all of the components of a traditional birth class for hospital birth, with a strong added focus on movement, breath and mindfulness.  We believe that understanding how to connect to our body, breath and mind in labor, as well as understanding the birth process and potential medical interventions, sets laboring couples up with the tools needed to make informed decisions when necessary and to open to the mystery of birth with confidence.

  • The “how” and “why” of using movement in labor
  • Helping baby find the best position for birth in the weeks leading up to labor
  • Anatomy and physiology of birth
  • Stages and phases of labor, including the power of pushing
  • Connection to breath in all stages of labor

Breastfeeding is a natural process, but it is not instinctive. Like any new skill, breastfeeding takes knowledge, practice and support to be successful. In this new postpartum relationship, the mother and baby actually learn how to breastfeed together.

Our breastfeeding course will cover the following topics:
♥ How breastfeeding works
♥ How to establish a good milk supply
♥ How to get your baby to latch
♥ How to know if your baby is getting enough milk
♥ Positions for breastfeeding
♥ When and where to get help should you need it

These classes are taught by Sally MacFadyen (IBCLC, CD, CCE) of The Fourth Trimester. Sally is a lactation consultant, doula, and childbirth educator and has been supporting families in our community for over 20 years.

It is best to attend a breastfeeding class 4-6 weeks before your estimated due date. Partners are welcome to attend the class with you, providing an opportunity for expectant partners to ask questions and be a second set of ears to remind you of tips when you’re in the thick of learning to care for your new baby.

Bringing your new baby home is exciting - and can also be overwhelming as you face caring for your baby 24 hours a day. We strongly recommend a newborn care class to learn baby basics, what to expect in the first few weeks, baby soothing tips, babywearing and diapering, and postpartum emotions.

Our newborn care class is taught by Amy Wenger, a registered nurse who works both on the postpartum floor of the UVM Medical Center as well as in an area pediatricians office. Amy is also a registered car seat technician and is happy to take a look at your car seat installation during the class.

Our Newborn Care Class includes:

  • Newborn traits and behaviors
  • How to read your baby's signs
  • Baby basics - feeding, diapering (cloth and disposable), bathing, nail care
  • Dr. Harvey Karp's 5 s's of baby soothing
  • Crying and comforting (baby and mom!)
  • Baby wearing basics
  • What to expect in the first few weeks
  • Newborn health - cord care, well-baby visits, jaundice, taking temperature

This is a 2 1/2 hour class on a Sunday evening, 6:30-9 pm. Upcoming dates:

  • August 20
  • September 23
  • October 8
  • November 5

Our two-hour sibling preparation class is structured to ease the transition to becoming a big brother or sister for children ages 2.5 years and up. Instructor Amy Wenger is a nurse in the UVM Medical Center postpartum unit and sees daily the emotions around that "big moment" introducing siblings for the first time.

Our Sibling Preparation Class includes:

  • The "parade of brothers and sisters" with special give-away flags from the hospital lobby to the 7th floor Mother-Baby Unit where our class will be held.
  • Tour of the Mother-Baby Unit where we will talk about and experience some of the things we may see, hear and feel when moms/dads are in this space with the new baby.
  • Washing our hands and using the hand foam as well as seeing how the different things in the hospital room work (bed, call buttons, etc.)
  • Practicing gently holding and diapering a baby doll.
  • Discussions around all the things that a new baby can and cannot do, how they eat, where they will sleep, and how they as big siblings can help along the way.
  • An art project to make a “Happy Birthday Card” for our big siblings to give to their new baby when they are born.

Parents are encouraged to ask questions and use this class to have and open conversation regarding the logistics of becoming a sibling, feelings, as well as changes in the family dynamic. All direction will be age appropriate. Please let the instructor know if there is anything unique and special that brings you to our class. We are here to support all types of evolving families.

This is a 2 hour class on a Saturday morning, 9-11 am at the UVM Medical Center (meet in the main lobby space, floor 3, by the couches in front of the information desk.)
